Map duration: preference and hard limit
Current operator policy, hot-loaded October 5, 2026. These settings live outside application releases and apply independently of the pending supervisor upgrade.
| Selection | Preferred played length | Hard maximum |
|---|---|---|
| Normal NoMod Standard and Mania | 90–135 seconds (1:30–2:15) | 240 seconds (4:00) |
| Standard DT outside Jump | 60–135 seconds, using the existing shorter DT minimum | 240 played seconds |
| Standard Jump, including DT Jump | Under 90 seconds; no Jump preference minimum | 240 played seconds |
The duration preference is soft: when both groups have eligible fresh maps in the current selection tier, the preferred bucket gets an 80% choice and the outside bucket 20%. If only one group exists, it is used directly. This is not a fixed session quota. Shorter maps and longer maps up to the cap remain possible; existing mode-specific minimums and all other filters still apply.
Jump's own preference does not bypass difficulty, passes, age, verified chart revisions or repeat guards. DT is Standard-only and uses speed-adjusted playing time, not source length. A 270-second source chart plays for 180 seconds with DT and can appear as a longer pick; a 361-second source chart plays for 241 seconds and exceeds the cap.

Each room explicitly stores:
{
"real_max_length": 240,
"max_length": 240,
"preferred_min_length": 90,
"preferred_max_length": 135,
"preferred_length_share": 0.8
}
The Mania-local mania_settings.max_length is also 240, eliminating conflicting older legacy values. Standard rooms separately pin jump_preferred_min_length: 0, jump_preferred_max_length: 90 and jump_preferred_length_share: 0.8. Jump's upper preferred bound is exclusive.
These values hot-load without restarting rooms or interrupting matches. Release defaults/templates must not replace runtime room settings. A root-owned approval record and the guarded deployment path check effective configuration and candidate duration boundaries before queueing future updates. The pending coordinated supervisor job also performs that check. Policy changes require explicit owner approval, not automatic synchronization to a new release's defaults.
Checking the room
.pool shows active preferences and limits. The configured ordinary label and DT's shorter minimum are distinct; use the DT guide for speed-adjusted examples. .time reports running-map time, which is different from map-length eligibility.
